This map was made by Kim Dae-geon (1822-1846) in accordance with modern cartography methods. Ulleungdo and Dokdo are described as territories of Korea. Dokdo is accurately placed outside of Ulleungdo. Korean pronunciation of the island names is used: Ulleungdo and Dokdo are marked as Oulangto and Ousan, respectively. This is the first map based on Korean pronunciation of geographical names that was introduced to the West. In 1849, a reduced version of the map was included in a document published by the Geographical Society of Lyon, France. The map was translated into six languages and played a role in introducing Dokdo to the West. The original map is currently owned by Biblioteque Nationale de France.
